Wetland and it’s importance …???
According to Ramsar convention.
“Wetlands are water locked areas with seasonal on permanent presence of water, static or floating fresh water or brackish or saline water, natural or manmade inlands or coastal and those coastal wetlands where depth of water should not exceed 6 metes of low tide”
It contains hydric soil resulting into anaerobic conditions. There is presence of hydrophilic vegetation for ex. Roper wetland Punjab
Importance of wetlands _
1.Economic importance. aquacultures. ,irrigation, eco-tourism.
2.Ecological importance
Recharge of ground water.
Recycling of nutrients,
Bio diversity (mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians)
3.Cultural and Heritage importance
Threats to wetlands:
1.Encroachment to wet lands,
2.Eutrophication (Discharge of sewage )
BOD ( biological oxygen demand)
3.Saltation
4.Weed infestations,
5.over exploitation of wetlands
6.Climate change
Ramsar Convention :
1.Its 2 February 1971 a conference held at Ramsar city of Iran on wetlands from there it is called ramsar's convention.
2. Objective:-
Wise use concept ( sustainable use of wetlands)
169 countries
3. Designation of Ramsar sites ie wetlands of international importance
4 . India has 26 Ramsar sites
